Stabilizing and structuring oil–oil interfaces by molecular brush surfactants

چکیده
Oil-in-oil emulsions provide a unique platform for numerous applications not compatible with water or aqueous systems. However, the limited types and complicated synthesis process of surfactants are problematic. Here, we put forward simple, yet powerful strategy to stabilize oil–oil interface, then prepare oil-in-oil emulsions, by using co-assembly polar molecular brushes nonpolar oligomeric ligands at DMF–octane interface. Molecular brush (MBSs) form assemble in situ minimizing interfacial energy producing robust film. We find that binding MBS interface is sufficiently high, leading construction structured liquids jamming MBSs. Using MBSs as emulsifiers, different including DMF-in-octane, octane-in-DMF, high internal phase can be easily prepared, showing promising microreactor systems advanced composite materials.

Polyelectrolytes: Bottle-Brush Architectures and Association with Surfactants
This thesis has the dual purpose of raising awareness of the importance of the mixing protocol on the end products of polyelectrolyte-oppositely charged surfactant systems, and to contribute to a better understanding of the properties of bottle-brush polyelectrolytes when adsorbed onto interfaces. In the first part of this thesis work, the effects of the mixing protocol and the mixing procedure...
متن کاملModification of deeply buried hydrophobic interfaces by ionic surfactants.
Hydrophobicity, the spontaneous segregation of oil and water, can be modified by surfactants. The way this modification occurs is studied at the oil-water interface for a range of alkanes and two ionic surfactants. A liquid interfacial monolayer, consisting of a mixture of alkane molecules and surfactant tails, is found. Upon cooling, it freezes at T(s), well above the alkane's bulk freezing te...
متن کاملStructuring Detergents for Extracting and Stabilizing Functional Membrane Proteins
BACKGROUND Membrane proteins are privileged pharmaceutical targets for which the development of structure-based drug design is challenging. One underlying reason is the fact that detergents do not stabilize membrane domains as efficiently as natural lipids in membranes, often leading to a partial to complete loss of activity/stability during protein extraction and purification and preventing cr...
متن کاملNano-Structuring and Molecular Domain Organizations in Lipid-Protein Membranous Interfaces
Cell membranes, lung surfactants and other liquid crystalline systems have become an interesting area for structural studies, due to recent evidence suggesting that such supra-molecular assemblies have micronano scale organizations or domains. Such domains play a critical role in functioning of membrane proteins, as well as phase segregation and liquid ordering of soft-materials in two dimensio...

Interface design should be informed by the application of top-down cognitive principles derived from basic theory and research. Cognitive design principles from 2 domains, event cognition and media, were applied to the design of interfaces for teaching procedures. According to theories of event cognition, procedures should be presented hierarchically, organized by objects or large object parts ...
